American Ground Zero

American Ground Zero
American Ground Zero is the extraordinary product of one photojournalist's decade-long commitment, a gripping, courageous collection of portraits history of radiation and interviews of those whose lives were crossed by radioactive fallout. For twelve years beginning in 1951, the United states government conducted aboveground testing of nuclear weapons in the deserts of Nevada. For more than four decades it has tried to cover up the human history of radiation and environmental devastation wrought by this testing. In American Ground Zero, Carole Gallagher has penetrated the veil of official secrecy history of radiation and anonymity to document the incredible untold story of the Americans whose misfortune it was to live downwind of the nuclear detonations - those citizens described in a top-secret Atomic Energy Commission memo as a low-use segment of the population - history of radiation and of civilian workers history of radiation and military personnel exposed to radiation at the Nevada Test Site. The aboveground nuclear testing was the most prodigiously reckless program of scientific experimentation in United States history, as Keith Schneider notes in his foreword to the book. Many of its 126 fallout clouds floated across the American West history of radiation and eastward with radiation levels comparable to those released at Chernobyl. Yet residents of the downwind areas were consistently told that there was no danger, history of radiation and were even encouraged to participate in a moment of history by coming out to watch these fallout clouds drifting over their homes. Abandoning her career as a successful New York photographer, Carole Gallagher moved to Utah in 1983 history of radiation and spent the next seven years networking among radiation survivors' groups history of radiation and finding people willing to be photographed history of radiation and tell their story. She coveredsix downwind states including test site workers history of radiation and atomic veterans. The result is a striking gallery of the undecorated casualties of an undeclared war. Never exploitative, Gallagher's photographs only rarely convey the subjects' considerable physical sufferings: instead, they invite th...

The Ghosts of Berlin

The Ghosts of Berlin
Berlin is once again the official capital of a united Germany and, perhaps, the metaphorical capital of a new Europe. In accordance with its received status, a series of massive architectural projects has been initiated, intended to restore, reveal, history of radiation and reinvent both the physical history of radiation and the symbolic city of Berlin. But to build a future, one must first examine the past. And Berlin's past is particularly troubling. In this elegant history of radiation and compelling work, Brian Ladd examines the ongoing conflicts radiating from the remarkable fusion of architecture, history, history of radiation and national identity in Berlin. How is reunified Germany confronting a divisive history of radiation and authoritarian past rendered tangible by the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, Hitler's bunker - even the Brandenburg Gate? How can the rich culture of the past, the artistic history of radiation and intellectual heritage of Berlin's avant garde, be rescued from the Cold War blight of Potsdamer Platz? And can the Neue Wache, Berlin's monumental remembrance of the horrors of tyranny history of radiation and war, become the structural centerpiece history of radiation and the symbolic guardian of this once history of radiation and future capital? With keen insight history of radiation and exacting scholarship, Ladd surveys the urban landscape, excavating its ruins, contemplating its buildings history of radiation and memorials, history of radiation and carefully deconstructing the public debates history of radiation and political controversies emerging from its past. In the end, it becomes clear that the ghosts of Berlin may never, indeed should never, fade away. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
